Key Idea
The success of a conversation is often decided in the first minute. To communicate clearly and avoid misunderstandings, use the TIP framework:
TIP Framework
T = Topic
- Clearly state what the conversation is about.
- Helps everyone focus on the same subject from the start.
Example:
“I’d like to talk about the July sales figures.”
I = Intent
- Explain why you are starting the conversation.
- Tell people what you need from them.
Examples:
“Can I ask you a question?”
“I’d like your advice on a decision.”
“I need your help with something.”
P = Point
- Give the main message or conclusion upfront.
- Don’t make people wait through lots of background information.
Example:
“The project launch will be delayed by one month.”
Three Questions Every Listener Wants Answered
- What are you talking about? (Topic)
- Why are you telling me this? (Intent)
- What’s your main message? (Point)
Practical Formula
When starting any conversation, email, meeting, or presentation:
Topic + Intent + Point
Example:
“I’d like to discuss the project timeline (Topic). I need your input on a decision (Intent). The current deadline is no longer achievable (Point).”
Main Takeaway
Before speaking, ask yourself:
- What is my Topic?
- What is my Intent?
- What is my Point?
Using TIP (Topic, Intent, Point) makes conversations clearer, faster, and more effective.
